Mustang Thief Leads Los Angeles Police On High-Speed Chase
Speeds approaching 110 miles per hour were achieved on the highways in and surrounding Los Angeles.
I guess if you’re going to steal a car and make a quick getaway, you’d pick a Mustang, right? After all, Hollywood has an entire movie franchise which revolves around one particular stolen Mustang. In this chase though, the pursuit ends with a Mustang driver in custody.
The pursuit began in the Boyle Heights area late evening on the 5 Freeway. High speeds were reached immediately, and that’s when police wanted to avoid a high-speed chase which could result in serious danger for other motorists. However, even with police leaving lights off and following at quite a distance, the driver of the stolen Mustang still occasionally left the highway, took surface streets, drove recklessly, and went back on the highway at elevated speeds several times.
California Highway Patrol soon took over the pursuit, where speeds still remained high. The reckless driving continued as well, with blatant disregard for lanes in construction zones and the usual weaving through traffic.
Police thought they had a chance to have the pursuit end on its own when the Mustang started pouring smoke out from under the car, but the car and the chase kept going, continuing into El Sereno. On surface streets, they were eventually able to perform a PIT maneuver on the Ford, ending the hour long chase.
For the owner of the car, it must have been otherworldly watching their own stolen car if they happened to tune in. But thankfully, the Mustang is going to be returned and isn’t at chop shop getting the VIN removed.
