Triple Black Mustang Drag Pack Vert Is an Incredibly Rare Find

R-code Stang has a 428 Super Cobra Jet, a C6 auto transmission and a V-code 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle, only eight were ever built in 1969.

Though the Mustang may be as plentiful as the Model T or or F-150, there are some rare ponies out in the wild. One of those Mustangs is the Drag Pack. From 1969 to 1971, these wild stallions came with a Super Cobra Jet 428 V8, 3.91 or 4.30 gears, and an oil cooler mounted on the driver’s side upon the radiator core support. All of this enabled these special ‘Stangs to tear it up on the drag strip while retaining its streetability.

Kirt Fryer of Tulsa, Oklahoma collects Drag Packs, specifically 1971 429 models. For him, his one true unicorn is a 1971 429 Drag Pack convertible, of which only around nine were ever built. Recently, YouTuber Jerry Heasley caught up with Fryer after a fateful trip to Canada, where he brought home not the car he wanted, but an equally rare 1969 Mustang Drag Pack.

“When you start looking at the Ford Mustang or the Shelbys, [and what] you’re looking for [is] extremely rare, it’s a big block, and it’s a convertible, and they’re really rare,” said Fryer. “You never really see these at auctions. They aren’t cars that show up at auction. You have to find them.”

When one of those rarities appeared in Calgary, Alberta, Fryer flew up to try to bring it back to Oklahoma, all to no avail. However, Fryer was offered another rare steed.

“We’re talking and he says, ‘Well, I got another Mustang convertible you might be interested in, and I’ll make you a little better deal on that.’”

What Fryer got was a 1969 Mustang Drag Pack with a 428 Super Cobra Jet under the hood, a C6 automatic transmission, and a V-code 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle, of which only eight were ever built in 1969. The R-code Mustang has the date code 15G in its VIN, translating to a manufacture date of July 15, 1969. Based on the date alone, Fryer believes this convertible was the last Drag Pack convertible made for the 1969 model year.

“This Mustang was three cars high,” Fryer recalls. “You had to use chain boomers to get it up off the rack, then take the slats out, so you could lower the car down, then you had to put the slats back in.”

Originally owned by Peter Klutt of Dream Car Garage, the triple-black (exterior, interior, and ragtop) Drag Pack’s 428 is numbers-matching, and the paint is all original.

The Mustang was cleaned up, with all of the “stuff from auto parts stores” replaced with Ford Autolite pieces. There is more work to be done for the car, but this may be as close as most people come to seeing a 1969 Super Cobra Jet Mustang Drag Pack.
