What's The Biggest Tire A New GT Can Handle?

RE: What's The Biggest Tire A New GT Can Handle?
Cool, I am into mopar musclecars as well an just picked up a GT for the daily driver.
I have the factory 18x8.5" wheels. The polished torque thrust look a likes. Very nice look IMO. Could they be a smidge wider, sure. But they really are fine for a close to stock car.
The stock BFG tires are even very good for all seasons. But I am planning to switch to 255-45-18 summer only tires at some point on these rims.
That would be the widest tire I would run up front. In back I would like to be able to run a 285-40-18 but need a 9-9.5" rim to do that.
If I was buying wheels I would go with 18x9"s in the front and 10 out back. Or 9.5"s all around.

um... Im pretty sure you can get the stock GT in the 13's.. From what Ive heard you dont need mods for 13's. (may be off though) Our car is crazy fast the way it popped off the assembly line. Doesnt mean I wont be adding any performance parts though [8D]

ORIGINAL: torch red
So you had the wheel made wider your self...didnt know that was possible...
I dont want a deep dish and i thought they didnt come with a 10 inch..now i know that is a option..is it a big deal to get it made wider.?

Yeah, I had them widened. Basically, the wheel is put on a lathe and cut in half. Then, a metal ring is welded into the cut area to make the wheel wider. I had mine done by Weldcraft (www.weldcraftwheels.com). It cost me $200 per wheel to widen them. The work was top-notch. I suppose "is it a big deal' depends on your point of view. It did cost more than the wheel itself to have 'em widened. But, on the other hand, $350 (cost of wheel + widening) is CHEAP as far as aftermarket wheels go. It was a very quick turnaround. I shipped Weldcraft my wheels and then had them back in a little over a week. Painless.

Interesting. Then I guess if I really wanted to I could get a pair of factory 18" bullets widened by an inch or so. They would match the front in style and still look OE and be able to take a 285 tire. Hmm.

The REAL FR500 wheels are forged. They are made by Fikse, and they are extremely expensive ($1400 EACH).
I bought the FR500 style wheels (copies) from Mustang Tuning. Weldcraft said that they had no trouble widening them, and they came out straight and true.
I wanted to copy the "black anodized" wheels that Fikse sells. However, I ended up getting a set of four for less than the cost of one wheel:
Four wheels from Mustang Tuning: $600
Widen the two rears: $400
Bead Blast and powder coat all 4 wheels matte black: $300 (local)
$1300 for all four wheels, and it's truly custom. Not bad at all!

Thanks for all the input and advice, and thanks Joe for the pics of the 295s on your car, those look nice. What brand of tire is that and what's the wheel size? Anybody else have photos of 295s or 285s on their '05 or '06? Or a pic of the 255s up front? Sounds like staying with 255s up on the nose may be the way to go. Thanks again, all ideas are greatly appreciated.
