My 06 was made in 9-05 and it's AL.
My factory hood was made in 10/05 and it was also aluminum. I also have the RK Spork GTR hood and I agree with Prof it's easily 5 pounds heavier.

Something must not of been working right the other day, got them this time. I'm leaning towards this one, or the 3dCarbon Boy Racer Hood.

actually there are very few hoods that are lighter than the stock one. my fiberglass GTR hood is actually 5 lbs. heavier than the stock aluminum hood. if you want feather weight stuff try VFN...but realize when you go to race weight stuff quality is the second concern. it usually take much more time to fit the parts and make them look acceptable.
Not to be a Pr#k, but there is know way the 05/06 hoods are aluminum, that damn thing weighs a ton....i would have to some type of article or paperwork that says the hood is Aluminum..sorry man its just hard to believe that its alum. My old cars (STi) hood was alum and it couldnt have weighed more the 5-8#s if that, and i know for sure it was Alum.
According to all the Ford literature put on on the 2005+ Mustangs, the hoods are in fact aluminum. I just stopped by my local Ford dealer with a magnet and confirmed this first hand. They had end of year 2006's on the lot, and they all had aluminum hoods; and they also had a 2007 GT California Special in the showroom, and it's hood was aluminum as well. I thought the hoods felt very light, especially when you consider you are lifting the whole thing since they have no lift struts or springs. Most steel hoods have struts or springs to lift most of the weight. It also sounds like Ford puts sound deading foam in between the braces and the hood skin like on the Ford F-150 commercials for sound deading, this prevents them from sounding like an aluminum can. Unless we hear of someone being able to stick a magnet on their hood, I think we can safely say that all 2005+ Mustangs have aluminum hoods.

Not only is mine Aluminum but it was made in mid 05/2006 - so if they switched over, they either a. switched back or b. mixed it up a bit...

It is a little odd, there have been a few posts here and there indicating people that have "failed" the magnet test (i.e. it stuck)... I checked mine after I opened it up the first time (wondering how thin it must be to be that light) and then did a little reading here...

Now if we could just find a way to get the damn things to latch we would be all set... I have lowered the rubber bumbers - re-aligned the whole thing (it was askew) and now I can at least close it, but it is still a bear

If you really have to press down on the hood, or slam it to get it to latch, try shimming the latch on the underside of the hood. Use a couple washers behind each side and this might solve your problem. I had to do it when I put the Kaenen hood on.

Moved down the rubber bumper "screws" until the closed hood height passed the finger level test (it was not visibly higher before, but the fingers told another story...)

Now it closes nicely... (this has the same effect as your shim suggestion - the fact that this worked made me go check the hood fit again...)

Those rubber bumpers scare me... the old padded bolt solution was harsh, but deterministic... squishy rubber screws that will get more and more brittle over time are going to annoy me at somepoint... oh well - all set for now

Well they had it on Moss, for a week or so around $650, but talking to 3D Carbon, they said its not even ready to ship out yet and the price was wrong. He suggested to buy one at that price, but looks like someone at Moss caught the error.

Email 3D Carbon, they were quick to get back.

Email:

As of today, we have installed another hood for check fit. The quality of this sample production part did not meet up to our standards. We will be making more changes and improvements before we will release this long awaited hood. As of today, there is not a firm ship date.

I did check out the web posting shown by Moss Mustang. The price posted is a big mistake. If you are willing to wait for the hood, I would suggest ordering it before they change the price. It is about $125.00 lower than where it should be priced.

At this point, it would seem with the current back log of a part that is not even available, advertising might be something we would prefer to stay away from until we are in full production and can commit to a firm release date.

Looking forward to helping you with this hood in the near future.

Best Wishes –

I never heard anything from 3dCarbon on their hoods actually being Cf. The units I interacted with at SEMA at the ford booth were fiberglass.
if they are trying to move to CF then their most likely having the same problem the world is having in the fact that their is no CF out in the market to make any CF parts. We've been on a world wide CF shortage for 18 months now.
I know there is a new functional fiberglass Cobra R2000 for the 05+ out now .
