Default Mud in da tires?

Hey all,

I just read an article in the paper about people now putting Nitrogen in their tires to increase gas milage. Can anybody validate this? Does it have any performance detriments?

I've heard of "mud in da tyres" but not nitro.

thanks

Nitrogen will NOT increase any type of performance including MPG. What it does is it keeps excess moisture from being introduced to your tire internally. Many installers are now using Nitrogen when they put new tires on because nitrogen displaces oxygen and water. Less H2O in your tire means less likely to 1) degrade the tire over time and 2) less likely to throw the tire out of balance since water does accumulate over time in a tire (when you add air).

I believe all Godyear tires on NASCAR tracks are filled with nitrogen (well, maybe not the pace car!)

I believe that nitrogen will not expand and contract as much with temperature so that you get more consistent performance....but I defer to the chemists. Also, then that raises the question of whether you put 32 psi of nitrogen in a tire spec'd for 32 psi cold, or if you put 36 psi in expectation of air being +4 psi when hot.....but nitroben pressure staying steady.

I guess a google search is in order, but I leave that to others...

Not as prone to leach from the tire like regular air so your pressure stays more consistant. Bigger modecules I think... really
