Tail Light Covers....Illegal?
ORIGINAL: backinblack06
I have the GTO brand smoked taillight covers, and they are not illegal.

Let me see if I got this straight... you're putting tint over your brake lights and think its safe???
Get a freakin' clue!
No wonder our insurance rates are so high!

unfortunately, it is illegal...but I do believe it also depends on the cop that sees it. Most cops (98%) have nothing better to do than give someone a ticket for something illegal they have on their own personal car (ie: tinted windows, light covers, loud stereo, etc...) or do in their personal car (ie: speeding, changing lanes w/o using a signal, following to close, etc...). But occasionally, you get a cop (other 2%) that sees it and just doesn't care....
....you have a 50/50 chance.
Good luck.

Are you guys saying the splitters I posted or illegal or the full blackout covers? They are both called covers on Moss mustang So I just want to clearify.
Riven, I live in sunny Destin Fla, home of the spring breakers and I can tell you anything covering rear lights will get you pulled. I have the same ones you are thinking of getting and had a cop behind me yesterday with no incident. It was my first test since ive only had them on for 4 days. I dont think you should have a problem with the outline slotted covers (As they arent really covers at all) but i wouldnt put anything that covers my lights-that's just me. good luck

Technically, and legally? I think that anything that you do to alter the visibility without DOT certification is leaving you out there.
I did install the "splitter" covers. I do not think it alters rearward visibility at all. If all those clear lens ricer taillights can avoid the law, I think we are all right.
It isn't the ticket that I'm worried about. What if someone rear-ended you and used defective taillights as a defense? What if someone died in that car. You are charged with vehicular manslaugher. Pure speculation, but in today's world???
The law is a fickle thing though. I remember reading a few years back that someone in NJ put a car body on a 4X4 chassis. The state would not license the vehicle until he crashed it into a wall at 35MPH to verify that the steering column would not impale the driver.

As I have said many times before:
If a COP wants to stop you (for anything), HE WILL!!!
Even though the smoked tail light covers look so cool, don't tempt the law to stop you and make an issue out of nothing!!!
Good Luck, Dace
