Anyone have opinions on 4.10 gearing for a V6 manual? Do I have to change my rear end too?And tune it?

Well my opinion of the 4.10s for a six are extremely biased based upon something that hadhappened to me in the past with my first mustang that was a 2005 V6 as well. Had them installed on my six banger for a month before things went wrong. Did the correct break-in period and everything. Then one night driving down the interstate I was going through the gears hard and right as I was done at the end of 4th I let off of the gas and my whole driveshaft broke off in 2 separate pieces. One of the pieces pulled the e-brake line and I went from 110 mph to 0 in less than 200ft. The other piece punctured my floor panel and put a hole in my gas tank. Also the pressure from whatever broke which was most likely the rear-end cause of the strain on the little 7.5" rear, shot up to the transmission andhad to have a new bell housing as well. Yeah about $7,000 later from my lovely friends at ford (NOT!!) I got everything fixed and they left the 4.10s in there I traded that broken bastard off for an 06 GT and I'm much happier w/ the GT and the way the rear-end was designed and enginered much better than the V6's rear-end.

To the OP and Sally, if you are going to install 4.10's in a V6, then I suggest getting a one-piece aftermarket driveshaft. I got mine from PH. I love my 4.10's, btw.

RE: 4:10s
I think this thread just finalized my decision to get 4.10's. Considering LA traffic is holding my top speed to about 45mph, Ican't come up with any good reasons why I shouldn't get gears. What other negatives did you guys consider before getting them installed? If you can't come up with a good one that applies to me, gears will be in by the end of the month.

What is the drivability difference between stock gearing in a manual 2006. Is it more difficult? Do you start in 2nd gear. What is the rpm's at freeway speeds? Thanks.

I ran 85 miles per hour yesterday at 3000 rpms. The torque is unbelievable andthe car is so responsive though out the entirepower band. Today I'll check the rpms again to let you know a wider range. Also you still have first gear its just quicker but yet still useful. Also Moosestang it might take time for others to adjust but the power difference will make you understand. I myself have no problem cruising at 3000 rpms the car reminds me of Eleanor.
