I just got rid of a bad scratch (or key mark) down the drivers side of my car. I applied about three heavy coats of duplicolor to the scratch and let it dry. I then used 1000 grit and wet sanded the surface flush. I used a polisher to get rid of the sanding marks. Can't tell there was ever a scratch there now and it got rid of the orange peel. Next time I would try using a finer grit sandpaper though as it took a fair amount of polishing with a VERY fine polish compound.
On my 06 i had paint mixed to match my car color...at the paint shop they said to apply it with the end of a match stick since it is durable but somewhat soft at the same time. It worked alright. Of course not as well as getting the area professionally fixed.
Cool, I'm going to give it a shot using 1500-2000 grit. Did you use elbow grease
or a machine to buff it out?
I use a polisher from Griot's Garage and their machine polish#3. It is the porter cable polisher with their name on it. It took about 6 passes with this polish because it is so fine, but it worked great. I don't know how good it would come out polishing by hand. Also, make sure you sand very lightly, almost no pressure and use dishwashing soap and water to keep it lubed up. The only problem is now I want to wet sand the entire car to get rid of all of the orange peel.
