I picked up a 2001 model Whistler off of ebay for $50, it has weather radio built in with accident detection. I works very well.

Lol I'd love to see a cop shoot a car through two other car windows to get his speed. Anyway, while they're moving it's kind of silly since you can't get the correct speed reading unless they are standing completely motionless on the side of the road and shooting you. Maybe Lidar is better and works while moving, I haven't had experience with that yet though.

He doesn't have to shoot anything when he is in the car driving... its nota laser. He just has to have his car pointed directly at yours to get your speed. The radar comes out the front of his car andgives him your speed reading on a little screen. He doesn't have to even touch anything. They use this radar all the time in cali and arizona. The only cops I see on the side of the road that are using lasers are motorcycle cops and if you get hit with a laser its more than likely too late to slow down.

the Calibre system looks sweet, but man it's pricey! i bet after instal it's over $1K
It is sweet. And you are about half way there on price...

I am surprised the suggestions were not more divided between Passport and Beltronics RX 65. I only saw 1 person say anything about it.
I have a Bel and like it very much. Never used Valentine or Passport, so don't have a good reference point to compare.

My suggestion (if price is an issue) Beltronics RX 65 pro or Passport 8500 / X50.
Don't bother with cheap cobras or others, until you actually get a real detector, you won't appreciate the difference.

P.S. Best detector out there: YOUR EYES!

That's only true with laser I believe. With the other bands, they can hit you on the run.

Your timing is impeccable because I just noticed this thread and made the same observation -- only one comment on the Bel RX65...so I decided it's time for me to chime in.

After comparing the Valentine, Passport, and RX65 on several websites (including radarbusters.com) about a year ago, I decided to buythe RX65 and have had zero regrets so far. It picks up signals from VERY far away in open, flat areas, and pretty far away in areas with trees and hill. Yes, there have been some occasions when I've been going up a loooong, fairly steep hilly area and didn't receive a signal until the cop was a little closer than I'd like him to be, butstill had enough time to react before getting nabbed.I swear that 98% of the time I'm alerted with MOREthan enough time to slow down, move over, and blend in with the other pokes on the road. Would I buy another RX65? Yes, hands down!

Quick story that I just have to share...

This past weekend my wife and I were driving back home from Chicago to the St. Louis area, and about half way home I came upona left-lane cruising schmoe in a Mitsubishi that simply would NOT move over to let me pass. When I finally had an opportunity, I blew past him on the right side and I'm sure my WOT exhaust note sent him the intended message I had for his driving skills (or maybe it was the middle finger I gave him). After that, the guymust have thought he was Speed Racer or something because he kept catching up to me, passing me at 90 or so, and then quickly slowing down again JUST to **** me off. Despite my urge to get intoa rage induced race with him or slam my breaks to force him off the road, I insteadkept my pony between 80-85 for about another 20-30 miles while he kept playing his games -- pulling in front of me, then slowing down to let me pass him, then speeding up to get in front, etc. The guy was a real dick and needed his facepummeled!! Anyyyyywayyyyyyy.......

We get around Springfield IL and I'm in front of him cruising at around 85 (in a 65 zone) and start getting an alert on my RX-65. I kept it at 85 for another few seconds until the alert picked up another bar, and from my experience with this thing, I knew it was a good alert and there was a cop up ahead. Well I'm sure you can guess the rest. I quickly slowed down to about 70 or so, move to the right and blended it with other cars, and while doing that, I wavedbye-bye to thedick in the Mitsubishi as he raced past me at around 85. He musta thought I was exiting because he did NOT slow down at all....and a few seconds later I sighted the familiar yellow/whitecolors of a state troopersitting in the middle of the highway...right about the same time that the dick's brake lights lit up! HA! TOO LATE! The trooperinstantly turned around and got on the highway, caught up to Mr. Mitsubishi, followed him for a little while to make him sweat, and finally said "hi"by turning on hisoverheadlights. I passed them both at just about the time they were coming to a stop, and my wife threw her arm out the window to give him one last sarcasticwave and smile. Yeah, we laughed for another few miles. I wonder what a ticket costs for doing 85+in Illinois. It's nice NOT to know.

Long story short, the RX-65 does more than save you money. It gives you entertainment too!

Radar detectors only really work if the cops really don't give a crap about you in the first place. Especially Highway Patrol are trained to determine your speed by their current steady speed. If you do get caught, you will be busted for your radar detector (if it's illegal in your state), jammer (if applicable), and speeding[8D]! I have quite a few cop friends, and I'm on the way to be one myself.

Anyway yes, cops in FL don't care because as of yet, they are not illegal here (I live in FL, and I too am addicted to the gas pedal). By the way, the department in Palm Beach County actually has a black Mustang GT undercover car on the highway, so if you're around the area I'd watch yourself! I think you can look up online somwhere, where they are illegal and not, although you guys will probably use them anyway.

Besides, don't you check your side and rear-view mirrors? Keep an eye out, that's how they find you in the first place!
I live in Palm Beach County and if you think there's only 1 "sleeper", have your checkbook standing by. Just yesterday I watched 3 unmarked Dodge's waiting for the word as another hit people with Laser cresting an overpass. Florida is famous for VASCAR (aircraft surveillance) as well which effectively makes your radar detector useless. I have an old Bel 745 STI plus in my Expy thats hard mounted to the overhead console behind the tintbar on the windshield. I know detectors are illegal in Virginia and Conneticut.

One of these years I'll grab something for my GT. Until then it's a crapshoot. Regardless once you're "lased", your *** is grass.........

Also Virginia. I have the Phaser from Rocky Mountain radar. I have yet to get a ticket with it. I have really gotten my money's worth out of it.

Legal in every state. Illegal in DC.
