Need help with gauge readouts for my Whipple...
I just finished the Whipple HO install with three gauges: wideband A/F, boost vac, and fuel pressure (all of em were Autometer Nexus). I am using the FRPP procal canned tune and will hopefully be able to get a custom dyno tune within a couple months. Help me out with these numbers:
Wideband A/F: it's reading at about 14.8-15.0 at idle. I think this is a little high, shouldn't it be around 12? Does this mean it's running rich, or running lean?
Note: the bung is welded right after the header, just before the catalytic converter on the downward sloping exhaust tube.
Fuel Pressure: around 40 at idle
Are these numbers okay? What should they be? Is this safe?
Thanks

I think you're OK on the A/F at idle. What's your reading at WOT? That's where you really should be around 12 for FI.
From everything I've read, your fuel pressure seems normal as well. It'd help a lot for some of the experts in here if you could post at idle, part throttle, and WOT numbers on everything, as the safe numbers vary based on how hard you're pushing the engine.
By the way, the higher your A/F number the "leaner" you're running. The lower the number, the "richer" you're running.

I haven't done a WOT run...I got on it a little bit and the gauge was all over the place. At one point it read about 16.0 and flashed red (which is what it is supposed to do, the warn was set to about 15.3). It fluctuated a lot, but it was high, then when I let off the throttle the number would drop to 12-13, then when I shifted it would jump back up again. I dunno what I am supposed to be seeing here.
BTW, my exhaust tips are very sooty, kinda like what you'd see on a 2 stroke dirtbike when it is running rich...does this happen on a car when it's lean?

Those #'s are perfect. You want to be right atstoich during idle/cruise. you may even see them go allot higher from a cruise decel....its ok.I see you have a whipple with 10spi. You will want to be around 11.9afr at WOT. A/F #s.......higher the # = leaner Lower # = richer

congrats on finishing the install and
welcome to the whipple club[sm=icon_cheers.gif] .
the soot on the exhaust, is from the
engine running a little on the rich side,
mine does it and some cars do it even
with just a cai + tune.

Thanks, this thing is a monster now...I have a big 'ol smile everytime I drive it. Of course inside I cry a little when I think about the cost of my fuel, but it's worth it. I'll try an post some pics later.

the fuel tears will eventually dry up
it takes a couple of months, then you
realize, it's all about the POWAH and
not about fuel efficiency , then the
tears of joy start

You'll also notice the A/F bouncing around whilst running on the cruise control as the throttle feathers in and out, no biggy. Pretty much disregard it whilst motor is Cold as well, it'll be all over the place
