Yeah, the difference in fuel economy isn't enough between the two to say no to the V8 if money isn't an issue.

thanks everyone.

I wish ford made the V6 into a 3.6L instead of the 4.0L

then there would be no argument.

The 4.0 is better.. and more fun to drive. Easily.

Sounds better too.

But that's just me. I had a high-revving car before this one (Mazda 6).. and it was annoying.

I'll take good low end torque over a few extra HP anyday.

It's remarkable that the EPA only estimates the V6 to be 1mpg worse when you consider it's 100 extra horsepower, 2 extra cylinder, and .6 litres larger. I just checked it myself to make sure you got that right.

Some people report getting 24 or 25 MPG average with the GT. I don't know how they do it because at 55mph my best fuel economy according to the dash is 24mpg. I average about 20.5mpg in my GT automatic overall but I do 80-90 on the highway and it's really really cold here so that's negatively affecting the mileage.

For what it's worth, when I had a V6 for a rental I averaged about 25mpg... that was in warmer weather however.

I'm skeptical that driven the same way and other variables being the same, a V6 will only be 1mpg better in the real world. It probably won't be as high as 5 however. Even given the price of gas these days, I will go out on a limb and say the gas cost will be negligible.

Insurance costs are also higher for the GT.

Personally, I think the GT is acutally the better value, surprsingly, even publications like Consumer Reports echoes this sentiment. If the V6 automatic (preimum package, pony package, traction control, 17 inch alloys, interior upgrade) is spec'd the same as a GT automatic the price difference isn't huge.

Also, notice that the automatic costs MORE for the V6 than the GT (860 - 550). Finally, the V8 engine from 06 forward has been shown to be slightly more reliable than the V6 according to CR.

They're both way more power you can use in the real world anyways unless you go to the track. I thought the V6 was high in fun factor, not as fun as the GT stock v stock, but high in the fun factor nonetheless.

My final and most important point is that if you're going for the automatic, I found the auto transmission performance in the V6 to be way rougher and slower than the GT. Shockingly, the GT was ultra smooth and snappy.

get the v8 its good on gas i get 24 to 27 highway in gas depending on how i drive
i agree, get the v8. you'll get great gas mileage on the highway if you drive conservatively, but when there's that a-hole that's on your tail, just blip the throttle a little bit and you'll give yourself a nice distance in no time.

as of right now i'm avg'ing like 17-20 and that's not too bad, the ml320 that i drove only got me like 11-15 so that was a big step up for me
