rollbar help please
ORIGINAL: mhconley
You don't need a rollbar in the convertible. The 2008 Mustang convertible is the first and only convertible to ever receive a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. That includes rollover resistance. About the only way to put one of them on theirroof would be to purposely put it there.

I know they are both S197s, but did the 05,06, and 07 all get that?

I have seen the five star rating butI have also seen the pictures of the S197 verts that have rolled.
If you want one for looks, I wouldn't on a vert because IMO they suck. You could fab up a pair of those cobra style bars for a little style. Mounting may hurt you though.
In my opinion a stylebar is "sporty" but a rollbar looks badazz.
A lightbar or "stylebar" or whatever you want top call it is nothing but a cosmetic piece though. Make sure you tell your dad that fact before he funds this project. The stylebar will not protect you at all.
Just have one built if you need a nice one. There is also an Autopower one you can buy pretty cheap and it bolts in. The Agent47 one is overpriced but better than nothing. I had mine custom built from chrome moly. You can get removable sidebars as an option too. I wanted a more rigid chassis for racing so I chose all six point welded static.

the pillars will hold up the car and protect you.
Here's the post but the pic links don't work anymore.
let this be a lesson for all of you. i had a perfect driving record. not one ticket, not one accident. hadnt so much as accidently backed into something.
all it takes is ONE slow reaction time and you get this.
what happened was my *** end got loose because some sprinklers had wet the roadway. I was making a right hand turn and shifted into 2nd in the water. She went sideways, i countersteared back towards the left but it was too late, my right front tire went up a support wire for a power-pole and then the car stopped moving forward - which is why im still alive. The car fell on its side, then rolled over on its top. We were in the road, wheels up. The head rests were the only thing holding the car a few inches off the ground - just enough to open a door and crawl out.
i went up the bottom wire, on the way down the bumper was ripped off on the pole.
shows you how flat she got once she was over.
i landed pretty hard on that curb, sideways
keep im mind i was going VERY slow when this happened, which is why i am alive. Had i been doing anything stupid on top of what happened i would be dead. No doubts in my mind.
like i said, let this be a lesson for all of you. BE CAREFUL!!!
on the bright side, ill be purchasing an 07 GT in a few days...

The CDC bar has been shown to stay upright and protect in a rollover. No it's not a 4 point bar but it's better than nothing. CDC and the like wouldn't dare call it a rollbar because of liability reasons but it helps more than one would think.
In the event that I drive with my seats tilted pretty far back, Could I posistion the horizantal bar that the harness's attach too farther back. So instead of straight across it would make the ) shape. Pushing it closer to the rear seats. Rendering them useless but they have been since i got the car.
Zkiller, where do the rearward bars attach to? Fenders? or floor? Do you have pics of where they are attached by chance?
I am going to be building my own cage pretty soon but would like to retain every panel and item in stock location. I'll be doing a similar 6pt with swing out/removeable side bars. I just have not decided where to attach the rear bars. I heard to the fenders was not as good as an idea as the rear trunk floor. I think I'f I wedge it through the plastic and the seat on either side it would work.

I have a 4 point cage in my 95 vert gt, and the thing that was terrible about it was that it totally limited the range of motion of the seats.
I was thinking about getting one custom made that is dual tubing.. that should be as rigid as a single tubing one right? Like 2 tubes half the diameter of the single tube so their width is half of a normal one and the seat can still move back...
a standard one looking from the top would look like this..
____________
O
O
____________
and i was thinking like this
____________
oo
oo
____________
giving me the clearance for the seat to move freely
what do you guys think?

I spoke to the shop that's doing all the rest of my paint/body work right now (they do a lot of custom fab jobs) and he told me it'd run me ~$1500 for a 4-point bolt-in cage painted to match my color scheme. A 6-point with removable arms would run me closer to $2k.
And that's not counting the customization necessary to my Cervini's speedster covers.. :-(

No way! The A pillars will cruch right down, seen more than one pic of an S197 rollover where it happened.
Here's the post but the pic links don't work anymore.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I have seen many roll over cars (verts) where the pillars kept the thing from collapsing. No, they weren't in prestine condition, but they worked and probably saved lives. They are stiffened to comply with Federal rollover guidelines.
Could I posistion the horizantal bar that the harness's attach too farther back. So instead of straight across it would make the ) shape
The center bar must be welded but it can have a slight curve on the ends.
Those prices sound about right. Like I said I paid 2200 for a chrome moly six point fully mig welded to the chassis. Mild steel cages will be a little less because the material is less money.
My rear braces attach to the floor with 6 x 6 plates.
Here is how we welded the rear braces:

Here it is with the stock panels and seat back in place. You can see the slight curve we put in the harness bar. We alsowelded in a tube for harness mounting point instead of a tab

zkiller thats clean. I think i am going to work off of that and probably do the rear bars in the same spot as you or bring them through to the trunk floor not sure yet. But I am also thinking of doing an X back there going into where the center seat belt clips are. Just a thought to fill the empty holes haha.
Yeah that was the curve i was talking about, What is the downside of it being a little more aggressive and farther back? Or Could I just bring the overhead bar farther back to clear?
And I like what you mean with the tube instead of brackets for harness's I dislike the harness tabs. Im thinking just using some like 3/4" tubing for the harness loops.
