And isn't messing with an odometer a federal crime?[]

Hmmmmm Not saying I have done it, but I have a really good friend who is an electrical engineering guy that used to reprogram the cards for satellite tv (he is a real wizard when it comes to electrical stuff) and I can say that he has a toggle switch in his Lotus that disables his odometer....and he says hte Mustang is FAR simpler than his Lotus...LOL

Could someone explain why not to do this to an auto....

I noticed the same thing when I changed my tire size with my X-cal 2. It allows you to go up to 10,000 on tire revs per mile. Mine are 788 per mile so, if you put in the 10,000[] you would only record 1 mile every 12 miles you travel.

Oh wow, mine only goes to like 900 something on the revs.

Your auto will not shift right

what you all are speaking of is odometer fraud and it's a federal offense.
Honestly if your so broke that getting a few more bucks out of your car that appears to have 10,000 less miles then it actually does is going to change your lifestyle I say sell it now and buy an aveo.

More times then not if you take good care of your car andsave maint. records, the miles aren't so important on a car.
And certainly not worth going to jail.

I did it as an experiment. It did not stay that way.

we swapped our stock gauges for the mycolor gauges a while back. when we did it, we picked up a used cluster from a salvage yard. our old odometer read 18,xxx and when i installed the new one it read something like 12,xxx or 14,xxx (i cant really remember).

surprizing that the car doesnt store that info in the computer, but if any of you guys are just outta warranty and something major breaks at least you know theres a way around it

i do not condone anyone actually doing that, this post is for informational use only [8D]

thats the thing it does store it internally. It knows how many times it's been to redline, top speed acheived, when it's been altered..

as for warranty, if you swap clusters it should have a tag installed from a dealer stating the previous and current miles on the cluster when installed. if you put in a cluster yourselfwith less miles then your current clusterand your under warranty I wouldn't suggest taking it in for warranty work. If you would go and your miles are less then they were your last warranty visit your warranty will be immediately voided and you will be reported. just an fyi. 30 years ago you could get away with about anything but these days it's tough to fool anybody or any system for that matter.

You know there is probably something that the Ford engineers put in the PCM that will record the "real" mileage, versus any mileage modified by a programmer... Somewhere along the line, someone plugs in a diagnostic tool and BAM! You get popped for odometer fraud!

I don't know if there is a place that records actual milage but it will recorcd actual hours of use. I knew a guy that had this problem on a pickup. Mileage was very low but the hours were very high. Said he idled a lot but it still raised a few eyebrows. He decided to keep the truck until it goes to the boneyard so he quit tricking the OD.
