Default 80MPH and a busted shifter....

Just curious about anyone w/ a Hurst STS. I'm driving into work, trucking along about 80 mph. Construction along the turnpike is pushing everyone over to the right lane. As I down shift into 4th the handle on the shifter practically comes off in my hand. Needless to say at that speed w/ traffic barreling up behind you it's kind of an *** pucker situation. After easing off in to the break down lane and dismanteling the boot I found the bottom bolt holding the handle to the main stalk of the shifter is missing. Has anyone else ever had this type of disaster happen to them, or just a luck of the draw kinda thing?

Wow, good thing nothing happened to you or your car with all that traffic. I can't say I have this STS, but regardless you should check to see if you have some faulty gear and if you didn't do the install yourself maybe check things out with whoever did. It's just what I would do if something in my car broke while doing 80 and created the potential for an accident.

Just my .02

DEFINITELY install some red loctite on the bolts that hold the shifter arm on the shifter mechanism. If they haven't started backing out yet, they will eventually.

The Hurst supplied lock washers suck. They're good for about 10 ft/lbs, but after that, they flatten out and do nothing. My bolts came loose on both of mine. I went up to Lowes and grabbed some real lock washers and have had no problems since.
