The cold weather caution does not apply equally to all performance tires. But if you don't know to look for more specific warnings you might miss them entirely.

FWIW, Toyo R888's at 140 treadwear are legitimately daily-useable, albeit with care, as opposed to barely legally OK as in the case of "R-compounds". This tire is becoming one of the "tires of choice" among members of a different forum for street-driven cars having strong all-around performance (and some pretty fancy build budgets).

my summer rims are 10.5 inch wide in the back....in snow they lift up like a snowboard on powder, while winter tires are usually skinny to cut right down to the ground and get traction

Exactly, the only thing the tune options will correct is the speedo.

I'm amazed you didn't feel the difference between the 20's and 17's with stock tires! I used to chirp 3rd "at will" with my car stock and the 17's. now with 20's it's a task. MUCH better handling with the 20's/35 series though.

The rim/tire may not be lighter. The 17'' stockers are pretty heavy and you have the addtl. tire weight from the 255'55's.

I can get sideways on the 1st/2nd gear swap with 20's is no problem. grabbing a good 2nd/3rd w/o powershifting is another story...
