Need Input on Questionable Vibration....please
I'm looking at a clean 2001 Mustang 2D Coupe w/V6 Auto Trans for my 16y/o daughter. It only has 84,000 Miles and it appears to be the perfect car for her BUT it has an unexplainable "vibration". Here is how it occurs.
The motor is smooth at idle when sitting still, but when you rev it up to 2-3k rpm's it vibrates which you can feel through the steering wheel. Below that it purrs like a kitten. Driving the car exhibits the same vibration in that RPM range when you "get on it". While driving, if you move out of that RPM range...ie. go faster, it smooths back out. Puzzling and I'd like to buy the car because it seems the price is right. $5500.
Any ideas what could be causing this vibration? Torque Converter? The vibration does seem to lessen when the car is warm, but cannot confirm 100% because I just drove it around the block.
HELP! I need to give the guy an answer Friday whether I want it or not.

Sorry for the length of the post and it not being a 2005-2010 model, but I had to post in a high traffic area in the hopes of getting some good input.
I can't go home until I bring home a Mustang, so help a brother out. LOL!

No abnormal noises, and the whole car kinda "buzzes" at said RPM range. I thought about a bad motor mount to. That was what I first thought of. I'll inspect the possibility of the motor mounts closer on Friday when I go look at the car again. Thanks 05.
Thanks for the link Sandman. Good read.
I may pass on the deal, but good clean Mustangs are hard to come by down here.

Since you said it's an auto, pull the E-brake put it in drive and give it some gas while someone watches the engine. if it moves abnormally in there it's pretty clear it's the mounts. i was thinking mounts too, since it just stays still when you rev it up..

Thanks for the tip Eddypython! I didn't even think of that. Shoey, thanks for the input as well.
The reason for posting is 1: to get feedback just like what has transpired. 2: to possibly "fish out" a known issue with this year, or similar years of this model.
I had a girl that worked for me back in 2003 that had a GT and she had nothing but trouble from the transmission. I was concerned that there may be an issue with the SN95's that I may be overlooking.
The car accellerates fine, the suspension is tight. The car looks like it was taken car of, but this vibration is alarming since it is within a certain RPM range, whether sitting still or moving, and then diminishes. Weird.
For some reason I keep revisiting the possibility of the torque convertor being the culprit. ????
