What Viper owners think of mustangs
#31
come on man, we can all hope but there is no reason to be delusional. As much as I love the gt500, a 500-600hp F/I V8 2+2 isn't going to touch a 8L V10 600+hp lightweight 2 seater on a track.

The Viper is now heavier than the previous generations and they're struggling a bit because of that, and that's a shame too. That car used to kick *** with style on the road course.

Don't know which would win on a road course? The stang would have to go some though. The GT500 is still I think 4-500 lbs heavier. Stock gearing on the Viper (or at least mine) is 3.07. Car is geared for the top end, not street light to light racing. Folk that race their vipers usually swap out to 3.73s. Stock Gen IV vipers run mid 11s in the 1/4 and there are many that hit high 10s by just swapping gears and tires (no power mods). Top speed is 202 mph with stock gearing.
But if you are going to compare the supped-up GT500 to a Viper, you have to use the Viper ACR which is modified for the track (shorter 5th gear, lighter, aerodynamic, suspension), and still street legal. At 150 mph, the Viper coupe generates 100 pounds of downforce; at the same speed, the Viper ACR generates 1000 pounds of downforce. There is also an ACR-X available for about $110K. Since the stock viper makes for a dismal daily driver, I can only imagine that the GT500 would be a limousine (comfort, utility) next to the ACR.

Let it be known that I have nothing against Vipers as they are great cars for sure.
It's just that the S197 platform has won more than any other previous Stang body style...
And I should know, I'm a team member (US only) of an endurance race team on a GT3 Mustang.
Of course we're talking about a full blown race car but the only car that can go after this Stang are the Porsches because of their lighter weight but it's still not a guaranteed win for them.

I don't doubt you about the GT3. If you are going to mention the GT3, let us not forget that the Viper also has a racecar model, the Competition Coupe which is a limited production pure-bred racing vehicle available only from Dodge and only to professional and semi-professional drivers with racing credentials.
I have no idea about classes or track/road racing. Would the Competition Coupe and GT3 race in the same events?
This thread sure has gone sideways from the original intent. Still it is interesting to see what is out there. I had never heard of the GT3 mustang.

I don't doubt you about the GT3, but that car looks like a dedicated racecar only. So it must be compared to the Viper Competition Coupe which is a limited production pure-bred racing vehicle available only from Dodge and only to professional and semi-professional drivers with racing credentials.

I don't recall which bodystyle change it was but from 91 to 2000 maybe? the Viper cleaned everything on the track.
The Vette guys were pisst! lol, and Mustangs were not even in the ball park.
Anyway, this Mustang is a factory Ford race car called the FR500GT.
Only 3 were made and we own all 3. The car was on the cover of the 08 FRPP catalog (dark blue).
Amazingly, it's still the 5.0 Cammer that pushes over 600hp naturally aspirated.
Since then, Roush/Yates make the engines (Ford couldn't make them reliable) and we matted it to a 7 speed sequential gear box. Fuuuun!
09cs, I don't have any good pics of this car right now but if you go to the team website you'll find some.:www.vds-racing.com
