Pinion seal replacement gone BAD!!!
Stopped by the dealer this morning to check how things were. They ordered the parts this morning and they will be in tomorrow morning. They are replacing and rebuilding it on them, I guess cause they effed up and it was not like that when I brought it in for a simple pinion seal change. They said they would give me a call when they got the ring and pinion out this was I can inspect it and see if it needs to be changed. Just aggrivates me that I went it for a pinion seal change, and now they are rebuilding my whole rear. Only thing I would have to pay out of pocket is for a 4.10 ring an pinion cause they cant replace it under warranty since the car came with 3.31's. Just hope they get it all together properly, otherwise I'll be visiting another dealer. Brought my gf's father with me so he could ask a few questions, and man they act totally different when you hand them a few $$. They have been very nice through this whole thing though and not giving me any problems.
^^ +100000000. it doesn' tmatter that you had aftermarket gears. they still screwed the pooch and are liable for the replacement at THEIR cost.
If I need a new pinion than I am going to tell them listen the car was 100% fine when I came in here, I want it fixed 100% when I leave here THE WAY IT WAS BEFORE YOU TOUCHED IT. I came in for a mother fcking pinion seal and now you effed up my entire rear. Never again will my car see a dealership other than the day I fcking trade it in. This is bullsh!t
Anyone know what I should do if they cant get it right again, after rebuilding the whole rear over??? I want to be prepared just incase something like that happened. Should I tell them I am taking it somewhere else and they are paying the bill (JDM)? Should I threaten legal action? Or demand they replace my rear with a BRAND NEW one from Ford? I really appreciate the help, cause if they mess it up after rebuilding it, they obviously arent qualified to do the job.
Jeez man. That sucks. Ford should cover the cost of the gears....4.10s are the same price as 3.31s and they messed it up. I'd demand them foot the bill.
Do you have your hand held tuner? Might want to try and lower the speed limiter to 30 MPH or so before turning it in.

And I am going to stop by the dealer tomorrow morning on my way to school and going to talk to the service manager, service advisor, and the mechanic himself and tell them I DO NOT WANT THE CAR DRIVEN OUT OF THE LOT UNLESS I AM HERE. I dont care if I have to make them sign to that on a ******* piece of paper. My mileage is exactly at 15018.8... It better not be higher than 15019.... and I will make sure I am there when they finish to make sure they dont drive it.
Good luck.
D
If they can't get it right, just keep brining it in until it qualifies for whatever lemon laws your state has. Then you can get out of the car, and into something different.
In the meantime, relax, go hookup with a lady, and lower that blood pressure. You're shaving precious years off your life with all this stress.
It'll all get fixed.

The dealer service department screwed up the pinion seal replacement - on a modified rear end - means that it isn't really Ford's problem in the end. The rear end was opened up and modified from the factory. So the dealer service department has the problem, not Ford.
Jim said it right...the rear had been modified already (with a 410 install), and leaked after only 7k miles? WHOEVER put the gears in SHOULD be liable for the seal, since they probably did not replace it or installed it wrong, perhaps, or it just failed.
Ford should not have been on the hook to replace the seal at all under warranty.
On the other hand, if it's costing $750 out of pocket to get it 'fixed' with new gears, go instead to a reputable performance shop and have them install the gears, with new bearings and such, and it'll most likely be done right. Although if ford will warranty their installation and offset some of the costs, you',ll be ok going there.
Still though, simply changing the pinion seal, there's proper procedures for doing it (and NO, TIGHTENING THE PINION NUT WITH AN IMPACT TO A CERTAIN TORQUE is NOT the way to do it). Improper gear install of the gears would have led to noises, not pinion seal failure. Improper pinion nut tightening would f-up the whole setup, which what happened when ford messed with it trying to fix the issue.
