Default Clicking / "Hard drive" noise coming from gauge cluster

Hello everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster looking for some help. I recenelty started hearing a very faint (but annoying) clicking noise. It seems to be coming from behing my gauges (speedo/fuel/temp) on the front cluster. It sounds like the noise old school hard drives used to make when they were 'thinking'.

I only noticed it for the first time yesterday after I pulled out of a driveway and ended up driving off the sidewalk a little bit...(thud)

I did some reading and found that there are a few people who have reported similar noises (not related to any sidewalk miscalcs), but haven't found a solution. Was wondering if maybe replacing the motor(s) behind the gauges could solve the problem?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

FYI car is an 06 Mustang GT

When do you notice the noise? While driving, after the car is turned off?

Yep, both. After the car turns off it keeps making noise (I think) until all the gauge needles are at zero.

Sure sounds like cluster motors to me. I have the same problem on my '09. This Spring I'll pull the cluster and take it (or send it) to a shop and have them redo the motors. It can be done yourself also...just do some searching, there are a number of good articles. I'd do it myself, but my concern as a first time try is getting the needles back in the correct spot. In my opinion, this is where experiance is a real advantage and I'll let someone else do it. There is a guy on ebay from WI that offers mustang cluster service. I've talked with him and he seems very good.

I don't believe it has anything to do with you going off your sidewalk. I remember a thread about this not too long ago. Nothing to be alarmed about, just the needle resetting back to its starting position.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I've noticed that it happens whenever any of the needles on the gauges moves (easier to tell right after shutting the engine off) so I suspect it is indeed the cluster motors.

I'm going to take out the cluster and start the car to see if the noise goes away (which will confirm it's coming from inside there) and then will likely try sending it to the guy on eBay in WI for repair (unless someone has a better place to recommend?).

Will let y'all know what happens. Thanks!
