Quick input needed before tomorrow...
So here is the damage..
BigO and I crawled under the car Sunday morning and got to work. Once we got to actually removing the linkage, we hit a little snag...

The bushing is warped and nearly completely out. WTF? In the next pic, you can see that it is partially covering the 10mm bolt connecting the linkage.

Fortunately, some knife skills came in handy and we managed to cut the bushing to expose that bolt head for removal. Once it came out, we started comparing the old shifter to a new one that a freaking hero of a guy supplied to me.
See anything wrong here?

For anyone that hasn't seen their OEM shifter up close, there should be a metal sleeve inside that bushing that fits around the bolt. Since my shifter was missing this, the bushing was free to "walk" around the bolt and was very close (pic 1) to coming out completely. I can't imagine the mess I would have been in had that backed out while driving.
Now, I'm shifting like I should have been all along. My 1-2 shifts are no longer detroying the left side of my bezel. Shifting problems are fixed but the noise is still there. I think us fixing this issue has all but isolated the sound to an exhaust leak somewhere.

Possibly?
Maybe there was once a short throw on the car and the previous owner went back to stock before trading in (while forgetting the metal sleeve).
Makes me wonder what else had been done.
My thoughts are they have at least removed it before and lost the metal sleeve. Like Rocket said I think it had a short throw on it at sometime. Probably removed it before he/she traded it in and didn't care that they lost that piece because he/she won't be driving it anymore.
