i can personally attest to the fact that my little 302 with 12:1 had a wicked idle and i only had a flat tappet .500/.500 lift cam, but it was also long duration (300/300). im rebuilding as a 289 with lower compression (estimating around 10:1) using the same cam and i'll almost promise ya that the idle will sound significantly weaker
