What kinds of power are you looking to make? You can build a 427 and have 250hp or 650 hp what are your plans as far as heads, cam, intake, internals, power adders, etc. You dont have to have a stand alone ECU you can use a A9P and dyno tune it and it will be fine.

well would like 500-600 ponys.. heads maybe afr 225s.. those should flow well.. and havnt decided on cam or intake but will get ones 2 match the heads.. the heads r gud 4 3500-8000 rpms so a cam and intake 2 operate somewhere in that ball park..and maybe some nitrous but would like 2 go alll motor... but i hav a bottle already so wouldnt hurt..

My current 408 build consists ofRHS 215cc alum heads with 58cc combustion chambers. these heads from the factory have an already stout valve train and are good for the 4500 to 8500 rpm range. I would highly recommend these heads if you are looking for the 5-600 range. They are actually designed and tested on 347-421ci and are capable of 650 bhp. As for the intake I believe your best option would be the edlebrock spyder efi victor jr intake and get a 90 degree elbow for a 90mm tb.

If you still want your original question answered, 427 Windsors are awesome power producers, but suffer in the long run due to the enormous stroke involved, namely piston/rod length ratio issues. You can build 500-600 with a 408 because I have done it. The options for top ends are getting better. The "Spyder" is a good option, also Reichard Racing makes killer intakes, they have some already made and can also do conversions on a carb intake (add bosses for injectors etc). Without spray or some type of power adder I think you will find you motor just a little shy of the mark with what you are expecting h/p wise though.

Here is My build:

Sportsman II Siamese Windsor Block (Notched and decked)
Scat Forged rotating assembly (balanced)
Sold the 5 axis AFR 225's and went to TFS 5 axis "R" heads (9:5:1 Compression)
F.A.S.T. management system
Now the issue is if I will Kenne Bell that bastard or huge centri huffer, that will determine the intake decision of course as well as the camshaft, but based on Kenne Bell's folks speculations with the right cam I could be looking at the vicinity of 650+rwhp @18psi.

i heard something about 418 being the largest you should stroke out a stock blocked 351w. But it also depends on who/how its built and the tune, as these make or break an engine

well you can stroke it more.................just the walls will be as thin as a sheet of paper and the engine will probably crack/explode when you go to start it
