Default muffler question(not about which one to buy)

Hopefully someone here can help me out with this one. I'm considering getting aftermarket exhaust(Borla or Bassani but just out of personal preference). My question is: what are the advantages/diadvantages of getting just the mufflers, compared to buying the whole cat-back system? Right now $700 for the Borla cat-back is a bit steep for my budget, but I wouldn't mind buying just the mufflers. I have heard some say that the whole system is the only way to go though. Is it the better stainless steel? Are the bends in the aftermarket systems better? Is it the sound? Thanks for the info guys.

IF you buy a catback from a manufacturer (ie Borla or Bassanni) the pipes will be mandrel bent

which means that the inside of the bends will be smooth, and not dimpled or sligthly crushed if you were to just bend piping of the correct diameter

on top of that, most (especially high $$ systems like borla or bassanni) are completely stainless steel, which are not likely to rust anytime soon, (borla in fact has a 1 million mile warranty)

there are other advantages im sure, there will be other people along to let you know what they might be

(just curious,, what do you drive that a borla catback is gonna cost 700$??????)

And the piping will also be larger than stock if you get the whole cat-back.

I just have a stock '04 GT. Had it for a year and was thinking about putting some mods on it. I got the $700 from the Borla website, although I'm not sure what the system would actually cost.

that would be your problem

the best bassanni system is usually around 700, and you can get the borla side exit for about that much i believe on other sites

but the stingers (the loud deep borla exhaust) is around 550 if you look in the right places

back on subject though
yes, the catback will have 2.5" pipes instead of the 2.25 stock (im prety sure thats the right sizes)
and you'll get better flow with the whole system meaning a tad more power, but more importantly, better sound

well, it doesnt sound like it would hurt to just do mufflers now(might upgrade to cat back later). How different do the the Borla Turbo mufflers and the S-type(stinger) mufflers sound? I want something with a nice deep rumble, but I don't want the droning at highway speeds. Are those both the same mufflers that come on their cat back systems?
