Default protecting rims

alright guys, i'm ready to buy a set of Cobra R's and tires. i'm gonna go with chrome 17x9 in the front and 17x10.5 in the back. my question is about tires. now i used to be into imports a lot and a few of my friends have tires on their rims that have this little rubber part that sticks out and over the rim just a tad. it helps in case you scrape up on a curb, you hit the rubber rather then scratching up your rim. does anyone know of any brands that make these tires to fit 17x10.5's?? i'm not good with what size to go with when it comes to tires. i don't even know what the numbers stand for [&:] tires never have been a big thing with me untill now. can someone help me out with any of this??? thanks guys!

yeah, some tires have that feature... its just an extended rubber rim on the sidewall. it hits the curb/sidewalk/whatever before the rim.

to help protect them, i would first use some sort of polish (meguiars nxt metal polysh is WONDERFUL) then wax them. yes, wax. i recommend meguiars nxt tech wax.

just buy wide enough tires that it offers the rim protection.

I have never seen those little rubber things... I am just very cautious of curbs... I go on the side that I would rather be a bit away from a curb instead of scraping into it. I know it's not the answer you are looking for, but I can help with the sizes.

As for tires, I haven't done the math for 17" tires, just 18" (because that happens to be what I have [&:]).

295/35-18 - The first number in the tire size is the width from sidewall to sidewall in milimeters. The larger this number, the wider the tire.
295/35-18 - The second number is the section width of the tire, it is a percentage. In the case of this tire, 295x.35=103.25mm. This is the height of the sidewall of the tire.
295/35-18 - The third number is simply the wheel size that the tire is supposed to be mounted on. A tire made for an 18" wheel can NOT safely be mounted (if at all) on a 17" wheel. Same goes if the tire is smaller than the wheel.

I would say go with a 265/xx-17 for the front tires, and for the rear, get a 315/xx-17. I'm not sure on the ratio of the tires, I would guess it would be around 35 or 40. Someone will probably be around with a link to the tire height calculator. Your factory tires are 245/45-17. You want the total tire height in the rear to be the same for your new tires as your old ones (otherwise your speedometer will be off). Tire height does not matter for the front.

My suggestion for a street tire would be a BFG g-Force T/A KDW. I have them right now (265/35-18 up front, 295/35-18 on the rear), and the traction is WORLDS better than stock, and it is a standard street tire so it will have good tread life.

The Kuhmo Exsta 712s on my '02 GT have that protective rim.....At first, I thought it might look stupid, but once they were on, I never noticed.......plus, those tires are the bomb......They were cheap and they really hook up.........great wet traction as well........

Mine are still the stock 17 x 9 Bullits with 245-45/17s but later on I'm going to slap on the Deep Dish Bullits that are a little wider........17x10 maybe? But I'll always go with Kuhmos........They have been GREAT for me.......
