Ok so on my 96 GT I was noticing the smell of gas and the occasional gas cap error code being thrown, so I crawled underneath and found that it was leaking right around the grommet that connects the filler neck and the tank itself. While looking I noticed that one of the brackets for the filler neck appeared to be backwards as shown in picture, or ???????? Help appreciated...thanks

That should definitely be flush.

Has your car been in an accident or recently had the fuel tank dropped?

It had a new fuel pump put in it this winter before I bought this spring

That explains why it's on backwards.

I wonder what *** hat put that on wrong. It's OBVIOUS what it does.

take it from me, that thing is almost useless. its not your problem, the grommit is rot. you gotta go to ford for a new one cause i couldnt find one anywhere else. they are like 40 bucks, and took me less than 30 minutes to change. the support you are showing is just to reduce the movement of the filler neck, and mine is on exactly like yours, and its been like that since i bought it. it doesnt have to be flush on the grommit.

oh and just dont fill it up past halfway until you replace that grommit, it wont leak if its half empty.
