By tool you mean an arm with a hole in the end for the tensioner bolt? Or a socket?

1) Make sure you make a diagram of how the belt is routed
2) Take the tool you have and put it on the nut of your tensioner pulley in such a way that you can pull up (towards you)
3) Pull the tool up and release the tension on teh belt. Slip the belt off. Gently let the tool go back down until it stops
4) route the new belt through all the pulleys leaving the tensioner pulley for last
5) Pull the tool up and route the belt around the tensioner pulley
6) gently release the tool making sure the belt stays on all the pulley's
7) you're done. Remove the tool start the engine, make sure the belt is secure.

how many miles on your car? I'd consider replacing the tensioner while you are in there.

I did just a belt, and now when I let off I get a squeak still... damned tensioner

8) Be glad you don't have a POS FWD car with a transverse-mounted engine that has an engine mount in the way of the belt

like what? a grand am or buick? I've done those. Not fun... some versions the belt is EASY, some it's around the motor mount. I know it's not cool lol
