I live in the freezing north, & would love to let a remote starter give the car's heater/defroster a chance to warm up the car before I get to it in the morning!
But my car's a 5-speed, umm,, I guess they make remote starters that bypass the clutch starter lockout?
well no not quite....I just spoil myself, there's nothing better than getting up at 5:30, going outside to head to work, and climbing into warm leather seats when its 28 degrees or less outside. Call me lazy, but by God i'm warm.
yeah i would like one but i was wondering about the whole 5 speed thing too
You can hook up a remote start to a manual car (safely), it just takes a little more work. I installed one in my 95 gt and never had any problems. The first thing you need to do is disable the little plunger thing that connects to the top of your clutch pedal(the part that tells your computer that the clutch pedal is pushed in all the way, thus allowing the car to be turned over and started). I just put some tape over mine so that it stayed depressed even when the clutch pedal was not. The second part is a little tricky, but it's not too bad. You need to go to radio shack and buy one of the magnetic switch sets that you would use on a home alarm system. I'm talking about the little magnets that go on windows or doors that trip the alarm when they are not connected(when the window or door is open). Almost all home alarms use these things so they should not be too hard to find. You connect one of the magnets to your gear shifter arm(zip ties work fine) and the other to any part of the shifter housing that lines up with your shifter arm when it is neutral. The magnets should only line up at neutral, therefor only letting your remote start activate while in neutral. The tricky part is the wiring. If you try to run a live 12v through these magnets, you will hear a little click, and the magnet is toast(go swap it out for another one at radio shack). I went through three sets of two before I got it right. The key here is to find the max voltage and amp rating of the magnetic switch that you use. Use a system of relays and resisters or what not with a voltmeter and mess with it until you get a safe power reading for the switch. Then hook up the switch. I hope this helps, I'm sure that there are more than one way to hook up a remote start to a 5 speed, this is just a way that I know works. Good luck.
