RE: Pinging?
Here's something easy you can do in the privacy of your own home...
A) Pull your spark plugs, systematically inspecting each for a whitish glaze, or electrodes missing/deformed.
B) If there are suspect plugs, replace them.
C) If none appear to have a whitish glaze, or disformation, move on, running lean does not appear to be your problem
And then...
D) Check your timing chain, or have a shop check it. When the chain gets worn/stretched, it can slap against the sliders that tension it. This doesn't quite sound like pinging, but to me, sounds similar to what you're describing..
EDIT: Oh yeah, if the spark plugs show no signs of lean-ness, you should look into checking out your fuel system, starting w/ the easiest first (Fuel filter) then going up from injectors to the pump.. Since you say your problem is between certain throttle points, and not just at WOT, you should do these things sooner, since 90% of folks are either at mid throttle around 2-3k RPM's..
