Tires for 96 GT

Tires for 96 GT
My tires are needing to be replaced on my 96 GT and I'm wondering a few things. They came w/ 225/55/16 and I'm wondering if I have to stick w/ that size tire of if I could possibly go any wider on the 16" rim. Also, I'm looking to spend around a 100 for each tire, give or take a little. What are some good brands you guys have tried. I'm looking for summer tires, so if it ever snows, I just don't drive it, so I don't need all-season. Thanks guys.
