RE: Tire Blow Out Going 65 mph
no
you ran the tire low on air and the inside of the sidewall got chewed up and it blew out
yes i can tell that just from looking at the picture
you prolly picked up a nail and didnt realize it
just go up to DT and get another tire for free (if you didnt buy certs then you deserve to be shot)
i work at discount by the way

oh and "the experts" thing
for the most part DT employees know their stuff, far more educated than the next tire distributor's employees. (in my region anyhow)
275/40/17 is the right size for the 9 inch wide wheel, the sidewall will sit flush with the wheel and you will have no problems with rubbing, up front or in the back
from the sounds of it, they're idiots at your local discount, though - because they said that the 275 might rub (it wont)

"just go up to DT and get another tire for free (if you didnt buy certs then you deserve to be shot)"
I didn't buy the certs because of the additional cost and the lack of issues that I have had in the past with tires. I also plan on buying 275/40/17 tires once thesewear out.

They said the front 275swould never fit. I think there is plenty of room under there and I haven't lowered my car yet.
"I hope you have leather seats because a blow out at 65 would have me sh*ting all on the seats. "
I have leather and the seats were fine --- no stains were found! :-)

I had a similar incident with my new tires...aslo bought at discount tire. They are 275/40/17 yokohama's and had about 100 miles on them. At about 65-70 my right rear just dropped. The sidewall was completely shredded. They replaced it for free and no problems since.
And yes 275/40's fit. Nice and wide all the way around

That sucks pretty bad...good to see your tire was the only victim...
That tire is a *bit* stretched on that rim, so if the air pressures are too low it's going to build insane amounts of heat near the bead or on the edge of the tread and just come flying apart - like it did.
After you get your tire replaced and pay - I would throw a fit over why the tire popped & how tires only shred like that when they are low on pressures. I wouldn't do it until the new tire is on & inflated properly, that way you can get out of this situation without getting totally screwed...

The experts at Discount Tire said the 245/45/17 was fine on the 17 by 9 rim. I want to go to 275/40/17 on the tires when these wear out. They said the 275 may not fit well on the front. What size should I use?
