Need some help with basic maintenace questions for a 97 GT
Ok, I just bought a 97 mustang GT vert, auto tranny, 53K miles. I know my other vehicles well, but havent had a GT, so I need some info from those who know the mustangs well.
1) What is the type of tranny that is in a 97 GT Auto?? I am getting ready to put a shift kit into it & while I am in there I am changing the fluid & filter. I use Mobile 1 full synthetic in my other trannies with great results. Is it ok to use in the GT tranny?
2) Changing the rear end fluid. Mobil 1 OK in there as well? I know some rear ends need friction modifier......do these? A lot of the S10's needed the modifier, but I have the Eaton Locker Posi with 3.42's and it didnt.
3) Is it OK to run a cooler thermostat? I put a 180 Jet Performance in my 4.3L, with the factory being 195 & want to do the same with this 4.6L.
4) Typically different plugs work well with certain vehicles. What seems to be the preference with the 4.6L?
5) Any preference on cold air intakes. I have had a K&N FIPK(very good) a AEM Brute Force(better than my K&N), & several no name intakes that actually made noise but hurt performance. What seems to work well with these mustangs?
6) Not doing major mods for about 3 years when it becomes my toy. So until then what type of mufflers sound sweet on the 4.6L? I tend to like the flowmaster 40 series with my other vehicles. I want it to sound mean....NOT ABNOXIOUS!! Opinions please.
7) Last but not least.........3.55 or 3.73?
*****I appreciate anyone who can take their time to help out a newbie to the Mustang. Been doing the forums with my other vehicles for several years. Learned a ton from some cool knowledgeable people. Also have those that want to give out their smarta$$ remarks. If you are one of those.............sell it on Ebay because I am not interested. Thanks guys!**********

Congrats on the new stang and welcome to the forums. You will learn so much here. These guys know every nut and bolt on these things
I think that all the mobile 1 fluids are great for everything on your new stang. I dont know anything about thermostats or plugs for stangs(Stock on my car).
The FIPK is a great cia for stangs.
I am also a flowmaster kinda guy, and they sound so great with headers and midpipe. believe me it souds mean.
PLEASE DO NOT GET 3.55's. The 3.73's provide considerable acceleration over stock. I couldnt even tell my gas milage suffered on my last interstate trip. Maybe 1mpg maybe. I dont know if you do any kinda drag racing, but if u get the gears, dont look for a big time gain until you can hook up better(tires most importantly).

i use ngk v-power plugs in mine....not sure about autos, but i believe they come with 3.55 (not sure though). 180 thermostat should be good. i have a mac exhaust on my car, but i want to go either flows or dynomax. good luck with the car and welcome to the forums.
