Default Spark Plugs & Fuel Filter

I consider this worthy of the tech section, but.....

I am pushing 60,000 miles and do quite a bit of traveling in my car. It seems as though I am getting about 20 mpg...which is fine....but could it be better? I am pretty sure the car still hasits original spark plugs and fuel filter. I will change the fuel filter out no question, but should I mess with the spark plugs? If so, I have seen write-ups that have you remove fuel rails and so forth as well as others that don't....does it matter? Lastly, what plugs do you all recommend for general performance and fuel economy?

no need to remove the fuel rails. you have to take the intake off tho to get to the passenger side. can't hurt to pull the plugs and see what they look like. i changed mine around 55k got 61k now. they looked fine but i just went ahead and changed them. i hear alot of people like the NGK TR6 i believe. someone correct me if im wrong.

You should be able to change the plugs without removing the rails. I did on mine. I used Motorcraft plugs from my Ford dealer. Also, I have found that gas mileage is
is increased by altering driving habits than anything else. Plugs should last longer than 60K but it certainly won't hurt to change them.

You should be able to get to them... Changing the fuel filter will definately help. 20mpg is not bad at all.. I wish I saw those numbers. The spark plugs are NGK TR55's. Those are a good set of plugs. They are not expensive either. I am running the TR6's but they are a colder plug. That is because I am running nitrous. I recommend the TR55's, that is the stock heat range plug for your stang.
