With 18 inch wheels I dont recommend lowering a car more than 1.5-2 inches. Even at 2 inches if you have a full car theres a good chance that it will rub... so i wouldn't lower it 3 inches... Plus you'll bottom out all the time....

I hope thats a typo, cause a 315/40 is way to tall. You would want a 315/30 for a 18" wheel.
The tires will fit, I have 315/35-17s on my 10.5" wheels.
Play around with this until you find what you want.

If you are lower 2 inches you should be ok. It may rub a little in the rear and you may have to reverse the quad shocks (I heard the 96-98s had to do this to fit wide rear wheels). 3 inches is a lot of lowering, I wouldn't do anything more than 2".
