Car whirring in neutral

Car whirring in neutral
I was drifting backwards down a hill today and realized when I got to the bottom that the transmission when in neutral starts to make a whirring scratching sound when in neutral for a little while. What does this mean? Throughout bearing? Transmission fluid? I'm sure someone else has had this happen.

Nothing. I put a brandnew TOB in my car when I did the clutch swap, and it made that same sound you are referring to from day 1.
Unless it becomes hard to get the tranny into gear, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

RE: Car whirring in neutral
From my understanding, most manual transmissions have an inherent whining, from the gears being tightly packed, and moving "involuntarily." Every 5 (2-4spds) speed I've ever owned always made a "whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa," when backing up... I doubt that there's really anything wrong..

The Tremec 3650 is a bit noisy in neutral with the clutch out.The mainshaft is fairly large and robust so there is some inherent whirring and bearing noise.I did not notice it for almost a month after getting my '03, howeverthat was 45k miles ago and it hasn't changed one bit...
