i would agree but it doesn't sound like it's inside the tranny. it seems to be coming from by the flywheel. i never got an answer to my first question is it possible for the flywheel to be out of sync with the starter? does the starter crank the flywheel and continue to spin or does it somehow disengage itself from the flywheel? i appreciate all the help and suggestions.

The gear on the starter is on a solenoid and only meshes with the flywheel when you are trying to start the car. Once the car is running it retracts and doesn't or isn't supposed to turn with the flywheel

maybe i'll get a sound clip up tonight after work so yall can hear it. im wondering if it is the starter hitting. that would be awesome. so much easier than pulling the header and tranny again.

Could you take off the starter and try to push the car off to start up the car? Then if thier is no nosie you will know it the starter.

well im retarded. after work i lifted it up again and started it up and really got underneath it and listened and it was actually coming from the oil pan. when iwas removing/installing the header i had put a pretty good size dent in the front of the oil pan since i had to raise/lower the engine. it was pushing whatever the vertical metal plate on the bottom of the opil pan is up to the crankshaft and it was hitting. i got it fixed but i feel really stupid.
I really appreciate all the help and ideas though. You guys are awesome.
Thanks!
