Default Whitish-grey thick smoke coming from tail pipes.

hey all, i got another problem. now i have this whitish- greyish coloroed thick smoke comin from the exhaust pipes. i heard that light colored smoke is never good so i wanna know what it could be? a mechanic said it could be oil in the engine. is that the headgaskets having a leak in them. i need only serious inquiries from people that have had this happen to them personally or someone else. the reason is that im going on a road trip from virginia to michigan on military orders. thanks

unplug the MAF sensor and start the car up. If the smoke still appears its probably your head gasket.

It won't run with the MAF unplugged.

Run a coolant pressure test. More then likely a headgasket, especially if you are running boost.

Wrong. It runs on the default settings in the computer rather than the readings in the MAF. It goes into what some folks call "limp home" mode. Losing your MAF won't leave you stranded. I've ran mine with the MAF disconnected before. Runs weird at times, but it definitely runs...downshifts are fun.

Light/greyish smoke definitely sounds like water getting into the engine. a.k.a. head gaseket or cracked head. Does it idle rough? Smell your exhaust, does it smell of antifreeze? Check your oil, if you see any "froth" or white foam it means water in the oil. Jglisson has a good point though, a compression check will definitely let you know. You can pick up a gauge at a parts store for a little of nothing. Hose with a screw-in fitting to go into the spark plug hole. Tedious, but not hard to do. Will generally expose a blown/leaking head gasket pretty quick.
