Default remove intake valve/spring?

anyone have the procedure for removing an intake valve/spring? i have a bent valve and need to swap it. i have a cheapo spring compressor from HF, but the thing sucks, so i rented one from autozone, seems to work somewhat better.

  • Remove the head;
  • Compress the valve and retainer/spring and remove the follower;
  • Compress the spring and retainer (hold the valve up against it's seat);
  • Remove the retainer keys;
  • Remove the retainer and spring;
  • Remove the valve;

How do i remove the retainer keys? i have the tool to compress spring from autozone, but i cant see the retainer nor access it? it doesnt compress the spring very well, but enough so that it wiggles around.

nevermind, i figured it out on the stock valve. i watched a video on a rice motor of a guy that used a modified socket and c-clamp.

i ended up using the spring compressor + whacking it with a mallet until the retainer keys popped out (then understanding what it was i needed to do) i just used all my weight to push down on the spring compressor which pushed down on the spring retainer, and used a magnet to pop the key out.

finally, not i just gotta do it to the new heads, which have boost springs on them.. lucky me... lol bet them springs are gunna SUCK.

Very often if you can't support the valve head solidly you need to apply a bit of persuasion to get the keys to pop from the retainer.

yea. finally got it. took some real persuation to get the bent valve out. now its even more of a job to get the spring back on, and get those damn keys into place! lol. my idea is to get a good large c-clamp and compress the spring down with it and a peice of my harbor freight valve spring compressor (the part that sits on the actual spring retainer). that or a cut out socket...

i ended up taking an 8" C-clamp, and welding the part of my harbor freight valve spring compressor that rests on the spring cap to it. threw a rag on the bottom of the valve, and it was 10000 times easier to install the keepers. had to put a bit of grease on them though to hold them in place they kept falling off lol.

anyways, cams re-installed, and i need to torque down the 13 bolts for the cam journal cap - does anyone have the specs for that? i cant find anything
