Default did i make an error installing camshafts?

Hello, I've tried searching the web for this with no luck and that brought me to this site! tons of great info here! Anyways... I have a 1997 4.6 Gt and I'm in the process of a complete rebuild. Yesterday I installed my camshafts into my cylinder heads while the heads were off of the engine block and installed the right side head on the block. The cams did not fit perfectly all the way down in each head upon placing them in and I assumed because one or more of the lobes touch the rocker at all times. After tightening down the main camshaft caps to the correct torque specs I noticed that a couple of valves did open about a 1/4 inch. Is this normal for them to do this? also it appears that the cam lobes are not perfectly on the rocker and are actually about an 1/8 inch off on every one. This doesn't seem normal to me. I know that each cam is specific for which cylinder head it goes to, so is it possible that I have them on the opposite that they belong? Just trying to make sure before I bolt the other one to the block. Thank you in advance for any knowledge you may have to share!

You should pop the followers out and install the cam in the head. Then once you have timed both cams with the crank at the correct position, You can then rotate the motor over and install the followers as the cam turns and is on the base of the lobe for each different valve.

well I found my issue after researching the serial numbers on the camshafts. I have one left side NPI cam and one left side PI cam. Apparently when I bought the PI heads off the guy i got them from he got one over on me :-/

^ That being said, is it ok to install the complete heads on the engine block today if I want (without the cams), and put the new cams in when I get them? I won't encounter any problems or anything doing it this way right? I know this is my first rebuild and I've got a lot to learn, but ya gotta start sometime! thanks for the info!
