Default Air Fuel Ratio

So today i had my gears installed and got may 97 cobra on the Dyno. The results were 282 rwhp and 293 rwtq. I have BBK O/R H flowmasters and a MAC cai. Well the problem is that the car is running to rich. My avg AFR was 11.7 it started at 13 which is ok but as soon as you hit WOT it went to **** dropping as low as 11.4. I do have a check engine light because of the no cats, but i have the MIL's on the rear O2's, and dont think i have a bad O2 sensor. They told me if i get it straight like 13:1 or even close to 14:1 i will gain like another 15 rwhp is this true. Would a programmer be the best and cheepest way to lean it out?

A chip might be cheaper.

The tuner would be his best bet, the chip is going to cost about the same, but if he adds any other bolt-on he would have to have it re-dynotuned and re-burned for the mods. Plus with the programmer he can advance the timeing, adjust shift points/pressure (if auto), use it to see and clear any codes, turn off his rear o2 sensors, turn off his traction control.

This is a 97 Cobra he's talking about. Normally I would agree with you about recommending a flash tuner over a chip, but Diablo doesn't even make a tuner for this year (the SCT XCal 2 would probably work though) and adjusting automatic shift points doesn't apply to a Cobra...they don't come with automatics.

Yes you are correct, I did not catch that it was a 97' Cobra, Must be I need to get some glasses!! I would look into the SCT X cal and see if they make one for the 97' Cobra.

Leaning out the A/F will get you more HP but..... 14:1 is the optimum ratio for cruise conditions not WOT. At WOT, that lean a condition could lead to detonation and engine damage. The idea is to get it as lean as possible without detonation. This also has a lot to do with how much timing you have in it. I personally would keep the A/F at 12.5 to 13.0.

You just said it, SCT does. It stands for Superchips Custom Tuning. http://www.sctflash.com/

DiabloSport makes the Predator, and is an entirely different company from SCT.

Both cost pretty much the exact same, $400ish.

my AFR was about 11.4-12 at WOT and was about 13 while it was at like 3krpm.

Jakes is correct, a A/F ratio in the high 12's to 13 at WOT is a number that will get you safe horsepower. A good tune will also flatten out the A/F ratio across the rpm range. Look into the SCT XCal 2 if you would prefer a flash tuner over a chip, I have heard nothing but good things about them.
