failure to start.

failure to start.
It seems as though i've reached the end of my abilities to diagnose a problem.
I have a 96 motor, trans, interior, everything in a fox. I'm trying to fire it up. i cleaned and checked the ground from the motor mount to the chassis, the ground from the negative battery terminal to the chassis and the ground from the brake box that is at the passenger front to the chassis.
still nada. i hear the fuel pump coming u]on when i turn the key. the gauge cluster comes on. the door chime. i don't have any lights in it yet...i guess the taillights. then i turn the key and nothing...then when i stop turning the key i hear three ckicks...2 in rapid succession then a third a second behind.
anyone have any ideas? i'd love to move on to getting this thing moving under it's own power before my wife gets home on tuesday.

this may sound stupid. . . but clean the battery terminals and posts very well. i had my car towed to a shop to find out that was the problem. i also had a buzz from the signal relay under the dash. shot in the dark, but its sometimes the smallest things

it's not the terminals. They're clean...the battery was my first thought. i tried 2 other batteries. then i thought well if it's not the battery it must be the grounds. which i suppose it may still be if there is one somewhere that i am missing.
i tried a bunch of stuff. there was something under the dash that i didn't have plugged in and i was wondering what it was then i discovered that it was the pats. i was sure that was it so i found it and plugged it in...but nope.
hooking up the taillights got the buzzing relay to stop.
at this point the only thing i see that i can't quite figure is that there is a little 2 pin roundish black female plug just upstream from the CCRM.
ANYONE?

The clutch switch is plugged in... i suppose the switch itself could be malfunctioning.
i could try bypassing it. anyone know if it's the black plug or the grey one on the side of the pedal assembly?

update.
here are my full symptoms.
when i bridge the solenoid the starter spins but doesn't engage the flywheel. when i turn the key nothing happens...this is the same thing that happens in my other 96 when i attempt to start the car without depressing the clutch.
battery is charged and fine. so it seems to me it must be the solenoid or the clutch switch.
thoughts?
