Default Fuel Pump Going Bad?

One day randomly on my way home from work my mustang started to miss but was throwing no codes at all. It was missing when throttle but not idle. My dad said try changing the fuel filter since that hasn't been changed at all. Just changed it and the problem is still there, and now also has the service engine soon light on. My dad's friend said it could be the fuel pump going bad. Could that be the case?
