Default Clutch replacement question

I've read a lot about replacing a worn out/bad clutch, however I've never actually had to do this myself, therefore...

What exactly does a clutch feel like or behave when it's life is over? What exactly does a "slipping" clutch feel like? Trying to educate myself so that if mine needs to go I can get it taken care of before damage occurs. Thanks guys. Cheers.

i had a clutch go out in a '97 ranger and in the days
leading up to it's final demise, it got increasingly
more difficult to get it into first gear.
