It's not there for a power increase, it has a higher rupture point than standard oil filters. A friend of mine ruptured his standard oil filter at the track this year. Not only did it oil down the track, it also sent him sideways at over 100mph when he passed over his own oil slick.
I now use the Ford Racing filter exclusively. Notice the Ford Racing filter retains the original height.
