92 mustang, no overdrive
Hey guys, I just got a 92 mustang convertable a couple of days ago.
5.0 engine, automatic transmission.
It runs great but it has no overdrive. It runs just fine if I turn it switch it off but just revs up high if I switch it on.
Im not too familiar with the engine yet so I had a couple of questions about it.
So whats involved in repairing the overdrive? Will it require a complete transmission rebuild or is it a seperate unit that can be replaced?
What would I expect to pay if I had it fixed in a shop?
I do have some mechanical experience so is this something a lawn mechanic would be able to do?

RE: 92 mustang, no overdrive
switch? u got any pics of ur setup?
the stock over drive unit is an extra gear and requires pushing the shifter into its position, there is no "switch" or "button".
the 94+ stangs use a push button over-drive unit i believe but i dont know why u would have one of those if you have a 92.
im guessing the previous owner beat the hell out of it (redlining 3rd into 4th alot)
the OD gear uses a band that weakens over time. you can buy an aftermarket kevlar band that will last forever.

By switch I mean shift into regular drive. No button or anything.
Ive been reading about this problem and it does seem that the overdrive band is the common problem. I have a chilton repair manual but it doesnt say anything about the bands. Whats involved in putting on the new band? I dont need a step by step list or anything right now I just want to know how complicated its going to be. Is there another repair manual that has more detailed information? I havnt worked on a transmission before but I will if I have to. hmm.. harbour freight has a transmission jack for $100.
kragen.com has a transmission band listed but no overdrive band, is that the right one?

well since ur gunna have to take out the valve body anyway, mind as well treat yourself to a Trans-Go Shift Kit
the kits include:
kevlar a-bands (the strongest available)
new valve body pattern which transfers the fluid better than the stock pattern
new springs for harder, tire-chirping shifts and increased shift points
and all necessary hardware
u can get them on ebay for like $90 or u can get one localy from a shop for about $120
they also come with a step-by-step video on how exactly to install the kit. it is easy but it is time consuming. its definitely going to take over a weekend.
take your time, you will be happy with the end result
u wont be playing with the transmission. u take off the cover and gasket, drain the fluid and take out the valve body and thats what ur gunna be working with the whole time.

you guys make your answers too long
your OD band is burnt. your trans will have to be taken apart to fix it, and no, a lawn mechanic cant do it.
lookin said something about a shift kit. if you want any kind of performance for your AOD, get one.
