Default belt

87 mustang gt:

OK replaced alternator and now my belt squicks badly at 2500 rpm's. I looked at the tensioner and my line is good amount to the right of where it says it should be. so, does this mean my belt is bad. Doesn't the tensioner auotmatically tighten the belt?

I know these are dumb questions but I get help everytime I post here!

Thanks in advance

so if my belt reads past the line where it says max then I need a new belt? A side note. when I replaced the alternator I tried to loosen the tensioner and the bolt wouldn't budge. So I just slide the belt off. Any idea's how I can loosen the damn thing?

You don't loosen the tensioner you crank the bolt to move the tensioner over away from your belt

there is a star bolt in the middle of the tensioner that removes it

why would you want to loosen the tensioner(bolt). If it past the line change it. you dont need to loosen the tensioner(bolt) to take the belt off. Its a self tension system, alls you need to do is get a wrench and move the tensioner up to loosen the tention and the belt will slip off. If the belt makes noise change it or try putting soap on it

told everyone I was a dumbass when it comes to working on cars. But with the help from everyone here I have changed the alternator, thermo among other things. Even though these are probably simple for you guys, they are challenge for guys who normally pay people to do this kind of thing!
