Default OIL PRESSURE-STOCK GAUGE

At start up my oil pressure is slightly above the middle bar on the stock gauge.(Normal)

When cruising around it stays at about the middle(Normal)

When I idle at at light etc..it drops between the two lower lines..not near the red 0 line but the one above it and the next one...so the first and second lines from the bottom.(The middle is the third)

Is that normal or too low.

My problem is I have no history on when this was last rebuilt. If that is ok then I am only going to change my heads and rock on, but if that is too low I will build a stroker.

Thanks

i had the same problem in my 87. best thing to do honestly change your oil pressure switch, costs like 15-25$ or so and usually corrects the problem.. You probably have normal oil pressure your switch is probably just lying to you. Buy it and pray to god thats the problem cause usually if it isnt that, its bearings and a oil pump.

If ones idle were too low, might it cause low oil pressure readings at idle?

You could change the oil sending and hope that's what the problem is or hook up a guage to get an actual reading. I have similar symptoms as you've described. I swapped out the sending unit and installed an autometer oil pressure gauge. After the motor is hot, the oil pressure drops close 0 at idle (850-900rpms), but goes up to 40 at higher rpms. Motor still runs strong and it's not knocking yet. But, the symptoms tell me the bearings are probably worn. I plan to pull the motor this winter anyway.
