Question on AOD Trans - No 3rd Gear
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have a question on my AOD transmission.
I have a 89 5.0 Show Car that only has 22,000 original miles. It has alot of work done to it but the problem I have is with my Tranny.
The tranny is a: AOD with full race build
Coleman-taylor 300rpm stall convertor
Raybestos blue racing clutches
Koline Steels
Baumann modified value body w/ shift kit
Deep sump oil pan
The way i was told to drive it was start in Drive and when I would hit around 45 to shift into overdrive. when you would slow the car down shift back down to drive. If you didnt the tranny work make a loud clunking banging type nosie which I was told was normal and could be taking care of by adjusting the cables. First wanted to no if anyone new if that part is normal and or true? I never race the car or beat on it and oneday something happened and the car wouldnt go into 3rd gear and is still not going. 1st, 2nd, and Reverse work. Just wont go to 3rd and beacause no 3rd also no 4th. I was wondering if anyone maybe had anidea of what could be wrong with the trans. Also if anyone could give me advise on what i should do with it. I'm told the parts in the tranny are top of the line and if it needed to be rebuilt would be expensive. Would it be worth it to rebuild it(depending on if thats what it needed or maybe it could be something simple and may not need an entire rebuild?)or should i put a new transmission in it. I was also thinking about converting it to a 5-speed manual. I didnt no if that would be a good way to go, but I'm not sure what work would be involved and how expensive that would be. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Tom

RE: Question on AOD Trans - No 3rd Gear
since u said its built and all this stuff I would buy a used AOD for a couple hundred and stuff it in there. if its just a show car you dont need anything fancy internaly-wise.
if it is indeed built to high hp specs and u never beat on it im sorry to say that it is a piece of junk. i beat the crap out of my AOD, havent flushed it and its got 158,000 miles on it. yeah it doesnt like going into OD but it still works

RE: Question on AOD Trans - No 3rd Gear
You snapped an end off the lock up input shaft. They are known for breaking on hard shiftsinto overdrive on deceleration. They do make hardened ones that you can buy from summit and ebay (just search for AOD INPUT) that shouldn't break.
I am recieving mine 2marow , but its for someone elses stang. He has snapped 2 stock ones and we are going with a hardened one.
The tranny doesn't need a rebuld, just the shaft replaced. When the shaft is intact, you just slide it out of the tranny (behind the torque converter) and the new one slides right in. The tranny doesn't need to be opened up. When it is broken, the shaft will also slide right out, but the broken spline will stay deep in the tranny. You may be able to remove it with a magnet, but i'm not sure. It may fall into a cavity or something. We are pulling the tranny out and taking it to the shop that built it and the dood said he would do it for no charge. I do not know for sure if the end snaps in the tranny or in the torque converter.
It does sound like your kickdown cable needs to be adjusted though.
Good luck and let us know what happens

RE: Question on AOD Trans - No 3rd Gear
check the bushing where the tv cable connects to the throttle body. the factory ones were plastic and would break any tranny shop will sell you a brass or metal bushing. if its fine then i would have it readjusted by a tranny shop.
