Why do you have the motor pulled?

When I pulled my harmonic balancer off I had the engine at #1TDC, but ended up having to rotate the assembly and now am unsure how the balancer was positioned. When the engine is at #1TDC, should the mark on the balancer be at 12 o'clock?
common sense [sm=icon_beat.gif] me
Balance this.

the balancer is key'ed, can only go on one way.
Yep, there's a term for that, it's called sailor proof .

Heh that's the fun part- I was following directions instead of common sense, and the thing didn't say to remove the lifters before removing the cam. Probably due to it being 2am and I had been working all day I completely overlooked it until I realized that the cam passage was blocked. I had a lifter removal tool that was doing well, but my genius friend decided to try to get one out with his hands. It got removed, right into the oilpan. At this point, with the engine already stripped down to the short block and since I needed to install a clutch/motor and trans mounts, I figured it'd be easier to just yank it out. Easier to put stuff back on while it's out anyway.

Edit: I'm installing pretty much everything in my sig, btw
