Hey guys, I am new here and I have a question about my motor. I just put new rings and got the motor back in the car. I am trying to get it to start and the ground strap is getting hot and smoking, what might be the problem? It still won't start but it will crank. I know I still have to check the TDC, spark and fuel to make sure everything is working properly. It's a carbed 302 in a 90 coupe. thanks for all your help.

how long are you cranking it before it starts heating up the ground strap?

Hey thanks, nice to be here. I crank it about 5 to ten seconds and then it starts to get real hot. Today I put another strap on and it did the same thing. Tomorrow I am going to check for spark. I am thinking that once the car gets started that strap won't get hot like that. It needs to be on for the starter to work. I will get pics as soon as I am on the road again.

sounds like a bad ground or maybe you have a short somewhere in the wiring coming from the starter.
