1st to 2nd gear shifting problem.
Ok guys, i have a 95 cobra, when I go to shift from 1st to second gear at 5800 rpm, I have a real tough time getting it into second, and it usually grinds and wont let me go in, However when I shift from 1st to 2nd at 5000 rpm it goes in smooth and fine, not grinding, no hesitation going into gear, Is it a synchro going bad or what? oh yeah this does NOT happen in any other gear. And i've noticed recently that while driving or accelerating my shifter will begin to rattle while in gear at higher rpm's and it never did this before, All bolts are tight so its not that, Maybe Time for a Rebuild?

I am having the same problem with my 1990 T-5. I know it is time to replace it. It has 225K plus miles on it and I just upgraded the engine to a 331 with a TFS top end kit. I thought it was clutch related but I replaced the clutch when I did theengine. Is it something as simple as synchros? or is it something else? Getting ready for dyno in 3 weeks and need to know if I should do the trans first? All the other gears pull hard and strong.

Exactly I dont know if its as simple as synchros either, however I also replaced my clutch and nope thats definitly not the issue on my car either, Just wish i knew more about transmissions haha.

Pull your shifters off, each of you, and see if the little plastic cup that the shifter ball sits in is broken. This will allow the shifter to move around some and you could be trying to mis align your shift forks, by putting too much sideways stress on it. Check that first, but I think that if the shifter cup isnt broken, then its the bearings inside your trans. That would explain the shifter vibration. a rebuild on a t5 is costly, and for aprox a grand more, you could have a tko 500, or a astro performance built t5.

hmmm...I didn't have a problem until I installed the MGW shifter...I will pull it down as soon as I get back. gotta go out for a minute. I wiil take some pictures and let you see/know. Its worth a shot...cheaper than a rebuild or new tranny. I still think I am going to need one or the other due to age and mods. I just need a few months to get other stuff straightened out. If this is the problem, how do I solve? Does the aftermarket sell little plastic ball cups?
